Evolve
Stamp
Photographs I have taken from my window for many different reasons, like a nice a sunset, the moon, a weather phenomenon, a beautiful day, something unfolding in my view, or everyday moments indoors such as a birthday, together now span a decade of images of my outlook at the edge of Amsterdam. And in nearly all of these images, there is almost always the same small brick electricity house, marked with the graffiti ‘evolve’.
Sometimes clearly visible, sometimes in the background or even unnoticed, but always present.
Ultimately, this resulted in a small work that serves as a tribute to the resonance of the word ‘evolve’, in which you can mistakenly easy read ‘love’ in it too. Created in a stamp-sized format, it incorporates the characteristic perforated edge as a reference to the former widespread use of stamps to send letters and postcards, to simply convey a message. Its modest size emphasizes the subtle yet enduring impact of that single word. In this way, the message continues to echo even as the graffiti slowly fades with the passage of time and the rise of urban development.
